The wide-ranging discussion covers everything from how founding partners Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Cornell University will divide research responsiblities (engineering and photobiology at RPI; applied greenhouse work at Cornell) to the benefits of industry partnerships (early access to technology) to particular areas of focus (tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries).

“The proposal is to reduce greenhouse crop production energy consumption by 70 percent in seven years,” said Mattos. That research, says Hort, has “the potential to impact controlled environment agriculture worldwide.”
